Session 20: Optimality approaches in biology

06.12.2022 17:30 - 19:28

Unlike the other sessions, this session will be devoted to a practical group work (without speakers), with the aim of compiling a list of cases in which optimality-based modeling was (successfully) applied to cells (or generally, in biology). This list will be very useful for our book project!

Between now and the session on Tuesday, we ask you to choose ONE optimality problem in biology  that has been studied, and for which a paper exists.

And let’s make this a game: ideally, try to find an example that NOBODY ELSE came up with (so, probably the example “FBA” is not a good choice (.. unless you’re into game theory and assume that nobody except for you will dare to pick the most obvious example ..)

During the session itself, we will collect all information in a shared doc, together with short descriptions (one sentence per approach/paper; and indicating the system modeled, the question asked (including the assumed objective, control variables, and important constraints), and what one can learn from this. The doc is already open and accessible, with instructions:
docs.google.com/document/d/1NON7y68NHG15JK9-WO9yddQcXgZrwbQI80BpGdbZedk/

If you have any questions, please have a look, or simply get back to me by email. If you already have some material to put there, please do it! I’m curious what examples of optimality modeling you will bring!

When: December 6th, 5.30pm CET
